Etang Tissier was purchased in 2005 and was previously owned by Monsieur Tissier who in 1980 had created the lake by damming the valley and enlarging the existing small pond, with the purpose of creating a duck shoot.
The name of the land was called Champ Chevaux, which translates to Horse Field. Not wanting to call the lake Horse Field (or Pete’s Lake!!!!), out of respect for Monsieur Tissier we decided to name the lake after him (he certainly was a bit of a character!)
After a 3 hour drive from the Tours area of France, we saw the lake for the first time through the old gate at the Chestnuts and Peter said to Tish: “I don’t like this!” But Tish, being the sensible one said let’s at least just have a look around.
Over the years we have put in roadway, moved the entrance gate, connected all the facilities (electricity, water, telephones and fosse) and built the Lodge, verandah and lakeside kitchen. The lake was nothing more than an area of water in a very barren, boggy and featureless field. We set about planting 100s of trees, reeds and landscaped everything to what you see today – it has taken us 8 years and is still being developed.
When the swims were first set out, they were positioned all around the lake: 2 behind the island, one opposite No 2 swim, one by the Willow Plantation and one on the opposite bank to the Lakeside Kitchen. However, we realised that as soon as lines were cast in the fish would not move away from the deep water or the monk (sluice), so we decided to move the swims to one side of the lake, which worked, as the fish now have a sanctuary on the far side of the lake (away from any movement), and move all the way down to the Lagoon; it is not uncommon to catch off the Verandah and swim No 1.
